Most HVAC Problems Are Sizing Problems
Homeowners tend to choose equipment brands. Installers know that the brand is close to the least important variable in the whole decision.
What actually determines whether you are happy with your system in three years is whether it was sized to your house, whether your ductwork can carry the airflow it needs, and whether anyone verified the refrigerant charge and airflow after installing it. Get those three right and a mid-range system will serve you well for fifteen years. Get them wrong and the most expensive equipment on the market will disappoint you.
Oversizing in particular is endemic in this trade, because it is fast, it is safe from complaints about not enough capacity, and almost nobody ever traces their comfort problems back to it. An oversized system short cycles, wears its compressor out early, and in summer cools the air before it has removed any humidity, which is how you end up with a house that is cold and clammy at the same time.
We do the load calculation on every quote. It takes an hour rather than twenty minutes, which is why our quotes arrive later than some.
What We Actually Install
Whatcom County has an unusually wide spread of housing for a place this size, and it drives what we recommend. Central Bellingham is full of houses built before central heating existed, where the ductwork was retrofitted decades later and often cannot support a modern system without work. Those homes frequently end up on ductless, and end up better for it.
Ferndale and the newer parts of the city are the opposite: purpose built duct systems, sealed mechanical closets, panels with capacity. Those are clean ducted heat pump changeouts and they are the fastest work we do.
Then there are the rural properties out toward Custer, Everson and up around Lynden, where propane, oil and electric resistance heat are all still in service. Those are among the strongest heat pump cases in the county on running cost alone, and the thing that usually decides them is the electrical panel.
